edanticonf s music feels perfectly crafted for the brooding atmospheric venues he so often performs in. both the aforementioned adjectives can be attributed to his style of techno too, one that places the focus less on the technical side and more onthe human one, aiming to reflect his emotions and state of being through the hazy soundscapes that draw influence from the natural scenery around him.

the trickfinger project was recorded 10 years ago with no intention of being released at the time, made purely for discovery and learning experience. in my opinion, making music with no intention of releasing it is the best thing a musician can do for his own development in this day and age. the trickfinger lp was made in that mindset, and it was the beginning of a new musical life for me. when i hear it, it sounds like i am opening up doorways to new worlds, and i never have had that feeling listening to music i made for the purpose of releasing it and selling it.

after a killer 12 inches from mori ra, jongno edits is back with two tunes, blurring the lines between editing and sampling. the a-side, 42 below, is an uplifting korean fusion boogie with slap bass, tropical synths, summery guitar and female vocals. given a serious dub work out by monsieur jongno. effortlessly working the bassline and guitar with added muscle, subtle dub fx s, drum fills, teasing the vocal and synths before unleashing the chorus and guitar solos. nice brazilian vibes on this one, like a lincoln olivetti production, seoul went rio. on the flip side, drums and a bass is an obscure lp cut from a korean percussion ensemble with traditional korean folk elements, tribal drums and chanting, spikey avant garde guitar plucks, rolling punk funk bassline that builds the energy levels with jazz style vocals and horns. sounding very liquid liquid, a bit can, a bit pig bag, with some korean craziness. expertly extended and re-arranged by the jongno edits main man to give it more of a dancefloor edge, and ramping up the psychedelics. powerful stuff.

the cultural phenomenon that is the wu-tang cannot accurately be described without referencing one of the pillars in the clan s discography, chef raekwon s only built 4 cuban linx remains firmly planted as one of the defining triumphs in their artistic legacy. the oft referred -purple tape-, has been cited and debated by many as the greatest wu-tang solo project to date and a remains a bullet point in any discussion involving the greatest -cocaine rap- or -street hop- albums of all time.

the house band of bunny ‘striker’ lee was formed in the mid-1970s by some of jamaica’s most prominent and musically expressive session players. the shifting core line-up spun off from the soul syndicate and thus typically featured earl ‘chinna’ smith and tony chin on guitar and bernard ‘touter’ harvey on organ. carlton ‘santa’ was the main drummer, but carlton barrett of the wailers band and ‘benbow’ creary were sometimes featured. most crucially, on bass, aston ‘family man’ barrett shifted to fully fullwood (and occasionally, earl ‘bagga’ walker), until robbie shakespeare took over, becoming the bandleader. the band was responsible for the popular ‘flying cymbal’ style that took jamaica by storm, and you can hear it in abundance on this killer dub set from 1975, its excellent cuts of cornell campbell and johnnie clarke material mixed at king tubby’s studio - a must for all serious fans of dub.

copenhagens music for dreams comes with yet another strong release - a double album of personal favourites compiled by jan schulte. according to all maps and witness accounts, germany does not officially have any tropical forests. this is of no concern to schulte however, who has unearthed many stunning examples of tropical drum music recorded there. perhaps the number of botanical gardens and palm houses in germany confused musicians into mistaking the climate, or maybe it was just a happy blend of escapism and multi-cultural integration within musical scenes that spawned such a curious output of undefinable tribal folk jazz. most of the tracks picked by schulte were released on small labels in the late 80 s. the musicians involved were mainly traditionally schooled, born and raised in germany. at that time to be interested in foreign folk music might have seemed a gimmick to some, what with the emerging -world music boom- already snowballing into the mainstream. but these songs, while they may be based on musical traditions from foreign lands, deal much more with introspection than exploitation. schulte himself points to his -general fascination for music that describes places where the artists have never been. songs about the jungle or the rainforest made by people that know the rainforest only from television and books. somehow i think you can hear their mythical imagination and fantasy in those tracks,- he explains....

freshly dressed after a double helping of made to measure goodness, aficionado size up another summer time smash for the sandal-wearing masses. keen to capture the coastal cool of the wirral peninsula, the label crack out the crystals and summon strange-wave sorceress brenda ray for another hit of her interplanetary excellence. wandering from new age haze to celestial rays on this tripped out trio, our genre blending genius takes the fourth world into the fifth dimension of psychedelic sound. our spiritual journey begins with the chakra cleansing solartude , an out-of-body beauty which bathes us in swirling flute, dreamy chimes and shimmering tape delay before sending us off towards the orient. eastern tones and hushed vocals ride a glistening sequence as this flawless fusion of exotica and dub suggests a medicated martin denny stumbling out of chinatown and into a humid mangrove. next stop on the voyage of self discovery is space dustin , a lunar lullaby for lucid dreamers which sees brenda spin fairlight mallets, celestial keys and whispered vocals into an immersive ode to the outer rim. floating free of space and time, perhaps you too can glimpse the excellent birds. over on the flipside and the temperature begins to rise. skip, hop to bop sees brenda dabbling with dub techno, setting basic channel synths and stirring strings to a skittering rhythm. dislocated and disoriented we descend into a strange subterranean world of rothschild parties, lynchian noir and muffled techno. surrounded by swirling voices, shuffling percussion grabs hold of you and all that remains is to sway.

although not a band in a traditional sense of the word, this record was created by a rotating ensemble of players: for a brief moment, musicians from different backgrounds (in this iteration: preslav, kenny peagler, waajeed, joe defazio and phil boyd) became a band and then went their separate ways. rhodes, funk basslines, neo-soul chords and tight drum programming are the lingua franca of the 24 hour band. the title of each song represents the time of day that inspired it and collectively, they point to the goal to create records that can be enjoyed not just in a club, but throughout the day, at home, or in your car. this is the 24hr band.

comet traxx is the new label of swiss prolific producer mirko loko, best known for his musical output on cadenza, visionquest and memento records. this new imprint is focused on cosmic grooves, with the aim to release quality timeless material. the first release on the label is the stunning -twin bang- album by the label honchos, mirko loko, delivering a modern sophisticated record with a very classic feeling, rich of collaborations with heavyweight musicians as derrick may and ursula rucker. for the next chapters of these astral tales, we can expect a spontaneous organic blend of electronic genres joined with a galactic touch: releases are not going to come only by mirko himself, but from interesting newcomers, as well as veterans as guido schneider who is in scheduled on the second catalogue number.

international reggae star alborosie returns with the dub version of his celebrated “freedom & fyah” album from last year titled “freedom in dub”. the distinctive production of these ten newly recorded dub mixes underscore alborosie’s skill and credibility as a master of dub. all tracks are produced and (mostly) played by alborosie and recorded at his shengen studios in kingston, jamaica.

the story of the great roots reggae harmony trio black uhuru is one defined by many unexpected twists and turns. in its best known form, led by michael rose and with founding member duckie simpson and the black american female vocalist, puma jones, the group would enjoy the greatest popularity of any act in the wake of bob marley’s untimely death in 1981, but the origins of the group lay in the turbulent waterhouse district during the mid-1970s. duckie first formed the group as uhuru, the swahili word for unity, with garth dennis as lead singer and don carlos to join him in harmony, after cutting an adaptation of the impressions’ “romancing to the folk song” at dynamics, “time is on our side” at randy’s for clive chin, and “slow coach” for raymond “benno” anderson, dennis drifted into the wailing souls and don carlos went solo, leading duckie to recruit rising waterhouse vocalist michael “tony” rose as lead singer, and errol nelson from the jays for harmony. their debut album, love crisis, was produced, voiced and mixed at king tubby’s studio by prince jammy and remains and outstanding example of jammy’s roots reggae production phase. the song “hard ground” vamps on a similar theme to marley’s “talking blues”: rose sings of a life of everyday hardship, with destitution and homelessness the pervading factors. on the extended dub portion and dub the instrumental cuts that follow the alternate vocal take of this enthralling 12-inch ep, you can hear the non-standard instrumentation that helps make the work so innovative, with winston wright’s harpsichord melody emphasising the hopelessness of rose’s emotive lyrics, the commanding rhythm and understated bass and guitar from robbie shakespeare and chinna smith completing the picture.

letherette step back up with a new release on their own imprint wulf records with ep4. letherette has released music on labels ho-tep and more recently ninja tune, but after starting their own label wulf at the end of last year have already released ep s 1.2,3, brown lounge vol 3 and now ep4. letherettes signature chops can be heard throughout ep4 from the disco cuts of flowatch to the piano slices of feel it. all mastered to cassette this ep centres around the dance floor but stays true to letherettes sound and melodies.

olim in latin can be used to indicate a time in the past or in the future. it can mean ‘once upon a time’ and ‘someday in the future’. a name and a project to try to move away from trends and genres, by taking inspiration from the past but at the same time leaving it, moving forward to shape a different and more narrative sound. the first attempt to do so is recursively: an 8 track album, opening with a sentence from bunny marrett sampled from an old documentary about st paul’s and the jamaican immigration in bristol during the 80’s. inspired by those intro words, recursively is a journey born from many years moving around, packing and unpacking suitcases, leaving villages, finding cities,leaving friends and finding more, emigrating, integrating. it’s a story about an entire generation trying to find the peace somewhere, somehow, sometimes by repeating the same steps in a loop of actions which seem to be the same but ultimately never are. it’s a soundtrack of those feelings and at the same time a message of hope to continue the journey through the faith that the meaning is the infinite journey itself. an infinite loop masterfully represented in carol rollo’s illustration. a story to be continued.
